The
New York City Department of Education – until recently known as the
Board of Education – serves more than 1.2 million children in the
five boroughs of New York City. The department is comprised of more
than 1200 official public schools with 48,000 classrooms, and runs
thousands of programs for its students. It leverages technology to
meet its primary goal of providing quality education to all
students.
Challenges
The Board of Education wanted to provide Internet access to every classroom in every school in the city – and to wire all 1200 schools within one year! The board wanted to enable students to leverage the vast amount of information on the Internet and provide a collaborative environment. The NYC Board of Education's goal was to connect every public school classroom to the Internet by June 2003.
Solution
EIA provided the cabling infrastructure to enable Internet connectivity to each classroom using a fiber backbone and copper to classrooms. In partnership with the Largest Global System Integrator provided Project Management and Network Integration services to implement and deliver the solution within the allotted time frame.
Success
The NYC Board of Education has seen the use of technology and the use of the Internet for instruction increase. The project has enabled both students and teachers to access information more readily, which translates into improved education. The project has allowed students to become proficient in many of the IT skills that employers desire and are in high demand.
Why EIA?
- Professional project management to meet the demand of the challenging goal.
- EIA has the breadth of capabilities and professionalism to deliver the project within budget and on time given the technical expertise.
- Highly skilled and dedicated people.
- Trust and confidence to deliver based on proven track record.
